Memoir: a theme, told with feeling

Autobiography: the full life, first person

An autobiography is comprehensive and chronological: childhood, education, career, family, later years, all in the subject's own voice. It's the right choice when the goal is a complete personal record for the family archive rather than a tightly themed narrative.

Biography: written by someone else

A biography is authored by another person about the subject — a researcher, a writer, or a professional interviewer. This is ideal when the subject can't or would rather not write, but their story still deserves to be captured. It's also the format most families choose when honouring a parent or grandparent, because it lifts the burden of writing off everyone's shoulders.
